Summary

It has been suggested that earthworks here might have been defensive, although this seems unlikely. The area was formerly a piece of common land and warren.

Map

Small bank and ditch around 3m wide found to continue north to 67103472.
Probably a path lined with trees which are planted on the low bank.
This is certainly not a defensive earthwork.
A. J. Lawson (NAU), 17 March 1976.

Small bank and ditch on this line - ?fortification - more probably due to tree planting.
R. R. Clarke (NCM), 1 January 1949.

See (S1) stating H. B. Lawrence claimed there was a hillfort here.
But in fact he only said it would make a good site for one.
R. R. Clarke (NCM).

In fact this feature forms a level narrow shelf projecting from the face of the hill and following the 100ft (30m) contour around the promontory; it has a small lip bank only for a short distance at its southern apex. It has only a couple of trees, not of great age, on it. The wood is not shown by (S2) and the 1838 OS shows trees only on the eastern slope, but the northern boundary seems to follow this shelf. Hill was formerly a common and warren. An unusual feature;
possibly may be an old trackway around the hill predating the sunken farm road below (note public footpath across top of hill connects the two ends of the earthwork, almost).
Visited and compiled by E. Rose (NAU), 21 November 1985.

Correction - the footpath is some distance further north. But the identification is still probable. It is quite probable that Lawson in 1976 mistook the farm road (also a public footpath) for this feature - the farm road was seen again by the present writer in November 1995 but not the feature itself.
Compiled by E. Rose (NLA), 9 November 1995.
