Full Description
1979.
'Medieval coins, lead etc' reported.
E. Rose (NAU) 29 January 1980.
Identified as British Museum as follows:
No.1.
Obverse: crudely incised crowned head.
Reverse: crudely incised cross with three pellets in each angle within herringbone outer circle.
1.6cm diameter.
The reverse is certainly derived from the sterling coinage which provides a terminus post quem of 1279.
As the basic type continued to be struck until the early 16th century, the object could have been produced at any time during that period.
The obverse is especially crudely drawn but, given the reverse, it can be see as a crowned effigy as on the sterling coin.
No.2.
Uncertain.
Can make nothing of the marks, either in positive or negative.
No.3.
Obverse: long cross voided with trefoil in each angle within outer circle.
Reverse: blank?
The obverse resembles the reverse of pennies of Henry I (BMC V) and Stephen (BMC VII) but as the design is pretty basic medieval type, the numismatic prototypes may be misleading in date.
Since the jettons were found together they must all be later than 1279, for of the derivation of No.1 there is no doubt.
R. Trett (KLM).
But why not a late collection of jettons of differing dates?
E. Rose (NAU)
