Full Description
Pillbox. Polygonal. Located from NAU aerial photographs.
E. Rose (NAU), 25 March 1980.
See record form (S1) in file by source [1], who adds: Common type 22A pillbox on field below lighthouse. Date 1940.
D. Walker (NLA), August 1996.
September 2004. Norfolk NMP. The grid reference for this pillbox has been corrected from TG 38813050 to TG 38793055.
An extant square World War Two pillbox and barbed wire defences are visible on aerial photographs ((S2) to (S3)). This pillbox is square not hexagonal, so cannot be a type 22 as described above and in (S1). It appears that it has been confused with the type 22 pillbox closer to the lighthouse (NHER 15917). The square form of this pillbox suggests that it is actually a type 26. Associated barbed wire defences are visible to the south of the pillbox on 1946 aerial photographs (S3).
J. Albone (NMP), 2 September 2004.
December 2004. Norfolk Rapid Coastal Zone Archaeological Survey.
Land-based survey; Area A63, Context 15:
The pillbox was recorded and it was confirmed that is square in shape. It is located in the centre of a field.
See assessment report (S4) for further details.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.421).
D. Robertson (NLA), 13 February 2006. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 20 July 2019.
August 2012.
Type 26 Pillbox still present. Evidence for shelving beneath the loopholes in the form of a series of metal brackets.
C. Kolonko (HES), 15 August 2012.
October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms.
This survey identified a large discrete area of magnetic disturbance in the vicinity of this pillbox.
See NHER 65683 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 August 2025.
