Summary

Palmer's Mill was formerly at site NHER 15119, and is one of only a handful of hollow-post drainage mills surviving in the UK. It has a single hollow wooden post with braces at the base which contains a plunger, as well as a restored metal gear housing and a wind vane and replaced sails.

Last hollow-post drainage mill surviving in UK - of great importance (information from Norfolk Windmills Trust).
Visited by E. Rose (NAU), 2 April 1980.

Single hollow wooden post with braces at base, contains plunger. Restored metal gear housing and wind vane (in place of fantails). Metal ladder attached. Sails not yet replaced though work about to begin.

Ranworth Mill, site NHER 23359, has since been discovered as a hollow post mill but is substantially different.

Palmer's has twin winding tails, spring sails and drives a plunger pump.

A plunger pump works by drawing water up from the dyke and depositing it on a higher level. Given a 10-15mph wind, this mill can pump 125 gallons of water a minute.
