Site of chapel?
In (S1), immediately following entry for 23 October 1850 (a visit to Edgefield Pits with Mr Harrod), is the entry 'Chapel: We also visited a very curious and interesting spot called the Chapel Yards, the foundation of a small building situated on what we thought looked very like a Roman camp a deep outer ditch and an earthwork on each side of it enclosing nearly half an acre'.
Illustrations show a rectangular ditch surrounding an L shaped building 10m east to west by 3.6m north to south and 1.8m
north to south by 1.2m east to west. Also three portions of stone mouldings, 'Mouldings I found No.1 Norman there were three short pieces and appears to have belonged to a door; No.2 very curious No.3 Late'.
There is only the preceding entry to suggest the site is in Edgefield.
E. Rose (NAU) 17 April 1980.

No name Chapel Yards, or corresponding feature, on Edgefield tithe map 1844.
