NHER 16074 (Building record) - Friday House, 7 Market Place

30 April 1980. Friday House, 7 Market Place.
Jettied building, two storeys, plastered façade with late openings, external south gable stack. Rear (west) wall has visible midwall rail or bressumer with studwork above (including inside later extension) and below, flint walling. In south room of house a spine beam and tiebeam across stack, each with single hollow chamfer and rollmoulding to each angle, painted in black and red chevron (compare painting at Church Farm Spixworth, Thorpe St Andrew Old Hall). Local legend that this was the gatehouse of the Franciscan friary. It stands on the old road blocked by the friary. Probably early 16th century date; is rear wall an underbuilt jetty with window repositioned?

April 1988.
In flint walling a mullioned and transomed window was found and removed. Mouldings of late 15th/early 16th century type.

April 2006. Detailed investigation confirms this is an early 16th century jettied building of remarkable elaboration and suggests that it was a pilgrim’s hostel or inn. Attic floor inserted after Dissolution; further alterations in 19th century.

August 2006. Building recording.
The house is located at the sout end of Friday Market near the former gateway to the Friary complex. In the hall is a carpenter's assembly mark on the axle joist. The principal axial joist and the end transverse joist have ogee and quarter circle (or hollow) mouldings, which are stylistic of mid-15th to mid-16th century.
