Summary

This field was subject to fieldwalking on several occasions during the 1980s. This work identified a scatter of Roman pottery and recovered a range of other finds, including potentially Mesolthic, Neolithic and Neolithic/Bronze Age worked flints, Roman coins and medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds.

April to July 1980. Fieldwalking (eastern part of field = Context 2):
Various worked flints recovered by H. le Strange:
3 ?Mesolithic cores and 2 blades.
1 Neolithic laurel leaf point and 25 flints of probable Neolithic date, including 12 scrapers, 1 retouched flake (probably a broken knife), 2 crude borers and 10 flakes.
2 Roman pottery sherds.

Identified by J. J. Wymer (NAU), Feburary 1989. According to (S2) these finds were given to the NCM, although they do not appear to be amongst the accessioned material from Ringstead.

Autumn 1980. Western part of field around Geddings Farm, west of Peddars Way. Found on ploughed surface.
Scatter of Roman pottery.
Material not seen by NAU or NCM.

Informant adds: Roman sherds are mainly 3rd-4th century.

Neolithic/Bronze Age flint industry including several good scrapers.
