Full Description
11 April 1971. Cropmark.
Ordnance Survey air photography.
Two parallel ditches with radiused corner at north, as cropmarks, located on eastern boundary of 'Little Wood' now removed. No trace of similar ditches on other sides of this former woodland - possibly due to excess soil spread on stump removal - but the radiused corner is anomalous and the ditches are on the line of the 50 foot contour.
D. Edwards (NAU) 20 August 1980.
September 2006. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks and earthworks of a curvilinear wood boundary bank and ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). The central grid reference for these cropmarks has been amended from TM 4438 9375 to TM 4431 9376. Cropmarks of a curvilinear bank, flanked by narrow ditches, are present. These form an irregular polygonal enclosure with dimensions of up to 250m by 150m. This enclosure corresponds to the position of ‘Little Wood’, a woodland which is marked on the first edition one inch to the mile Ordnance Survey map (S4). Although its name and shape suggest that this should be an ancient woodland, it is not marked on either Faden’s 1797 ‘Map of Norfolk’ (S5) or Bryant’s 1826 ‘Map of the County of Norfolk’ (S6) and it possibly of post medieval date. Little Wood was still present in 1946 (S7). It had been completely cleared by 1966 and converted into arable land (S2), although part of its western boundary survived as an earthwork and field boundary.
J. Albone (NMP), 04 September 2006
