Summary

In 1974 an 'underground passage' was reported on this site. It is said to have been made of flint and mortar, sloping down and ending in planks. It is thought that this dates back to the 18th century or earlier. Metal detecting in 1985 recovered a Middle Saxon or Late Saxon copper alloy disc brooch and an Edward III farthing.

December 1974. Reported found in laying gas pipe.
'Underground passage.' Said to be of flint and mortar, 6ft (1.8m) diameter sloping down for 9ft (2.7m) and ending in planks. Bones and iron spur said to have been found.
Visited by E. Rose (NAU), 4 January 1975 but filled in.
No buildings on site since 18th century at least.

1985. In immediate area of the above; metal detector finds in ploughsoil.
Middle Saxon/Late Saxon copper alloy disc brooch with backward looking horse in relief, and Edward III farthing.
Neither seen NCM or NAU.
