Full Description
Lime kilns.
Two kilns (now in a farmyard) with interconnecting tunnels. Narrow gauge railway lines still lie in the yard.
There in 1885; closed in 1940 because the light from the fires attracted enemy aircraft.
Information from Norfolk Industrial Archaeology Society.
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU), 31 October 1980.
Further kiln from present small access is older and larger. Circular tunnel around 8ft (2.4m) high, 4 to 5ft (1.2 to 1.5m) wide. Bell on other hand is very narrow, furnaces less than 2ft (0.6m) across. At least four furnaces but further side of tunnel blocked. Nearer and smaller kiln much later with only two furnaces.
Compiled by E. James (KLM), 23 January 1981.
1992. [1]
Kilns found to have been buried with tipped sugar beet soil.
Site noted in White's Directory 1864-1883 (S1) and in Kelly's from 1875 to 1916 (S2). The site is also marked on the 25ins O.S. maps 1885 (S3)
