Summary

A World War Two Type 22 pillbox is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs and is also recorded by documentary sources. It formed part of the outer defences for the nodal point of Acle, presumably protecting access to and from the River Bure to its east and the use of Acle Dike by boats. Local information suggests that torpedo boats were built in the surrounding Eastick’s Boat Yard, which was also used as a boat patrol base. The pillbox could have been sited to protect either or both of these military sites. It survived until the 1970s but has since been destroyed.

There is now no trace of any defensive position in this area, nor no sign that there ever was one.

It is said locally that motor torpedo boats were built in sheds at this locality, so a defensive position may have been associated.

NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TG 411 107 to TG 4115 1069.

The pillbox described above is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs (S1)-(S4). It has also been recorded by the Defence Areas Project (S5). It appears to have been a Type 22. Whether it was specifically sited to protect the suggested torpedo boat site (see above) or boat patrol base (see (S5) and Acle parish file) is not known. Modern Ordnance Survey mapping, which places the pillbox within Acle Dike itself, would suggest that its site has been utterly destroyed, presumably when the dike’s northern bank was cut back.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 18 May 2007.
