Summary

Unusual earthworks and cropmarks, connected to the stream, are visible in aerial photographs from 1977, and may be a fishpond for the chantry house to the north. The earthworks are of uncertain date, and evidence from 1996 indicates that they may have been filled in.

Map

1977.
Earthworks and cropmarks. Very unusual feature. Abrupt rectangle off stream to south with internal straight ditches
not reaching sides. Possible central pit with recent dumping or overgrowth, though this is not clear on photograph. A drain crossing field to south enters stream exactly opposite this pit. This layout seems pointless for drainage, and
does not look like a moat. Could it be fishponds for the chantry house to north?
E. Rose (NAU), 17 December 1980.

Plotted on overlay by J. Bown (NAU), 16 December 1980.

Slight undulations in pasture field. Little resemblance to description in NHER. Local information states that infilling of original earthworks was undertaken by owner some years ago.
H. Paterson (NLA), 1 May 1996.
