Summary

Metal detecting and fieldwalking in this area during 1981-84 recovered a variety of objects. Finds included a Mesolithic flint blade, a Neolithic flint axe, a mid 2nd century AD coin, a medieval shell-shaped ampulla and a 17th century tag.

1980. Metal detecting. Ploughed field.
Bronze 17th century tag end with loop; incised stiffleaf ornament (S2). Identified by J. Cherry (British Museum). Donated to Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1981.417).
English jetton with pierced centre and pierced at edge.
Edward I sterling head; border of pellets. Reverse: border of pellets, strokes and short cross with three pellets in each angle. Obverse no.1 (but border pellets only). Reverse: no.4. See (S3).
Bronze pointed oval 14th century seal with loop on reverse. S SIMONIS DE WALPOL. Device; virgin and child with kneeling devotee.

Roman coin, sestertius of Antoninus Pius AD 137-161.31) in file.
Lead ampulla with scalloped shell reverse, probably Walsingham (S4).
Post medieval lead bale seal, complete, crowned portcullis. Inscription illegible round edge (S5).

1 Mesolithic flint 'microblade'.
1 Neolithic part-polished flaked axehead (middle section only, polished edges).
6 undatable crude flints, probably not prehistoric (2 with very worn edges consistent with having been strike a lights, 4 probably building debris from flint facing).
