Summary

This area, which forms the eastern portion of the site of the Roman vicus (NHER 49204) surrounding Burgh Castle (NHER 10471), has been the subject of an intensive programme of fieldwalking and metal-detecting which has yielded: Iron Age and Roman coins, brooches, rings and other metalwork, Early and Late Saxon brooches, Middle Saxon coins and other Saxon metalwork, and medieval and post medieval coins and metalwork.

This record describes the surface finds collected from the eastern portion of the site of the Roman vicus (NHER 49204) surrounding Burgh Castle (NHER 10471). See NHER 49204 for early cropmark evidence in this area which was previously recorded under this number. See also NHER 49203 and NHER 49205 for other undated cropmarks in this area. Some of the cropmarks visible on aerial photographs could date to the medieval period, when a motte and bailey castle was built within the Roman fort.

1934. Casual Observation.
Two Roman greyware urns were found in January in the northeast corner of this field at a depth of about 18 inches (45.72cm). The contents of one run were removed and the contentes of the others were disposed of.
A handled flagon were found on 13th February with "a few scraps of iron".

1988. Field Observation.
Site visited following reports of trial holes being excavated in this field. These were found to be bore holes excavated with an 8inch auger. No finds were observed.

April 1993. Metal-detecting Rally.
Iron Age strap union (S4), 196 Roman coins, brooches, rings, Early Saxon strap end, Middle Saxon sceat, brooch etc, Late Saxon metalwork, medieval and post medieval coins and metalwork.

One of the objects found at this site during the 1990s is a Late Saxon Borre-style disc brooch. This brooch is amongst those included in the catalogue that accompanies thesis (S10).
