Summary

Parallel linear ditches visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and of unknown date may in part represent a trackway. The features do not given the appearance of being particularly old, but they cut across former field boundaries of probable medieval to post medieval date, and thus, if they are not entirely modern in origin, they are likely to instead pre-date at least the post medieval enclosure of this area.

The parallel linear features described above relate to up to three parallel linear ditches visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 1256 0639. It is possible that they represent a trackway, at least in part, but they otherwise remain enigmatic. The relatively ‘modern’ character of the cropmarks suggests that they are of recent origin and of negligible archaeological significance. However, there is no clear supporting evidence of this recent origin, and they cut across a pattern of irregular field boundaries (also visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and depicted on historic maps) which suggests they may pre-date the post medieval enclosure of this area. Their shared orientation with a possible enclosure of potential Roman date 715m to their southwest (NHER 53489) may be relevant in this respect. Alternatively, an association with the medieval to post medieval settlement remains 20m to their east (NHER 53601) is possible, although the cropmark features described here are very different in character to the settlement earthworks to their east.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 21 April 2010.
