Full Description
Before 1978 (original find).
Secondary findspot: garden of Mulberry House, The Avenue, Wroxham.
A. Mortar; of Caen stone. Dunning type 2. Compare with Clarke and Carter, Excavations in King's Lynn 1963-1970, 1977, 337). Two pairs of opposing attached handle-ridges. Base mostly worn away. Diameter at rim 54cm, height 32cm, average thickness 6cm. This is a far greater size than any other type 2 found by the compiler.
Identified by E. Rose (NAU), 1 June 1981 and J. Cherry British Museum (MLA), 4 June 1981 from photographs.
B. Stone object described as a 'lid' by donor but probably base of a large stone vase or similar. Oolitic limestone. Identified by E. B. Green and P. Lambley (NCM). Mostly broken but original section of radius suggests diameter originally around 40cm. Has large knob expanding to top in centre, 23cm maximum diameter and 17cm high, with central hole from other side of object.
The objects are believed to have formed part of a collection belonging to the previous owner of the property who had them 'all over the garden'. Left behind these and a knifegrinder's grindstone when he removed in 1978. However it should be noted that the house, which is early 20th century, stands on part of the grounds of Wroxham House
(now demolished). It is next to a walled kitchen garden of around 1820 and a mulberry tree of great age.
