Summary

A Bronze Age socketed axehead on display in Wisbech Museum in 1981 is thought to have been recovered in the parish of Swaffham. The exact date and nature of its discovery are unclear.

Plain socketed axe with double mouth moulding in good condition with dark green patina.
On display in Wisbech Museum 1 May 1981.
The museum has no records relating to this axe, yet it has Swaffham written on it in black ink.
Its dimensions are the same as another from Walsoken (NHER 2382). Said to be in the Museum's collections, but which could not be found. Confusion?

No - drawings from British Museum card index show this is definitely not the same as the Walsoken axe.
However there are several Bronze Age axes recorded from Swaffham Fen, Cambridgeshire. Could this really be from there?

No again - the axe is also marked inside the socket 'Swaffham Norfolk WH'.
