Summary

A Bronze Age copper alloy unlooped palstave with shield decoration was found on 'Hilgay Fen' in 1884. The exact nature and location of this discovery are unclear.

1884. 'From Hilgay Fen'.
No evidence of association with looped palstave from same collection.
Unlooped palstave with shield decoration and lateral vertical ridges and damage to one flange.
Formerly part of collection donated to the Metropolitan Borough of Hackey in 1910. Listed as No. 236 in the 1934 catalogue. Believed lost or stolen. The Central Library was bombed (1939 to 1945) and burnt (1950s). The
collection was crated in 1964 to 1965 when some objects were believed to have been stolen. No bronze implements remain in the charge of the Archivist. R.R. Clarke (NCM) had received a pencil sketch of the object (S1), but the date of the artist of this are unknown. The relevance of the attached letter is unknown.
