Summary

Observations during building works in 1982 noted Saxon, medieval and post medieval pottery fragments. A 1997 evaluation excavation in advance of further building works revealed a Middle Saxon boundary ditch and a medieval ditch and post holes, both with associated pottery fragments.

25 January 1982. Foundation trenches for new house dug, but concrete base of footings already inserted when visited.
Access from road to northwest also dug.
No stratigraphy noted except layer of very dark grey sandy loam with charcoal flecking under topsoil at northwest corner of house. Natural yellow brown sandy clay with flints.
Finds from spoil heaps as follows.
One base sherd slightly pimply Ipswich ware with internal sooting.
Three Thetford type base sherds, one sagging, one flat.
Nine body sherds (five probably Thetford type, four early medieval or medieval).
One medieval or post medieval glazed.
One post medieval green glazed.
In view of the well washed surface of spoil heaps and trench edges, pottery probably shows only slight Late Saxon occupation in area dug.
Only one animal bone noted, but soil may be acid.

November 1997. Trial Trench.
Evaluation excavation in advance of housing.
Revealed Middle Saxon ditch thought to be settlement boundary, Late Saxon beam slot, medieval ditch and postholes.
Pottery of these periods, also residual Roman.
