NHER 18066 (Monument record) - Multi period finds and possible Roman building

1981-2. In grounds of Old Rectory
At 9582 8575, NHER 18066 Context 16.
Possible small moat or ditched house platform, about 15m square. Central island grassed (ploughed in past), about 1m high.
Ditches on north, west and east dry, grown with reeds, trees etcetera. South side part of area of low ground adjacent to river, perhaps formerly flooded.
To north, land is higher.

Scatter of sherds from grounds collected by informant and owners who retain them. Collected on grid pattern.
Also from small excavation at south end.
Large amounts Roman coarseware.
Medieval unglazed.
Some green-glazed.
Two sherds Castor? Ware.
One sherd grass-tempered Early Saxon or Middle Saxon, (S3).

Site visited by J. Wymer (NAU) at time of construction of new garage.
Plan in file. All of areas 16 to 23 and probably portions of adjoining squares found to have been destroyed by lake dug without planning permission.
Finds from spread spoil from this designated as context 30.
Finds from trenching for new garage in context 8 also.
Finds include Thetford type and medieval wares, Roman wares and tile; bones; flint flakes.

1995. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of swimming pool and groundworks for pool house.
No archaeological features observed. Finds included:
Prehistoric worked flints
Roman sherds, pin and box tile.
Medieval and post medieval sherds.
Human bone perhaps from churchyard.
