Summary

A complex of cropmarks visible on aerial photographs were initially interpreted as a motte and bailey castle, but an excavation in advance of sand extraction revealed that the cropmarks were the result of modern ploughing.

Area under barley.
Area of soilmark clearly shows as isolated hill.
Perhaps 15m high, with the enclosure running around its side or base.
1:2500 plot in hanging file.

13 to 22 November 1985. Excavation.
Excavation in advance of sand quarrying.
On sandy Leziate beds of Sandringham series.
Soilmarks shown to be result of ploughing removing the 'A' horizon from upper part of hillock and exposing dark mottled ferri-humic horizon beneath a little distance down the slopes all round, hence the marks.
