NHER 18136 (Monument record) - Site of medieval to post medieval settlement near Hales Hall

Summary

This was the site of a settlement during the medieval period. The settlement had shrunk by the post medieval period, and was eventually deserted. The slight earthworks of medieval hollow ways and house platforms were visible on the site in the 1980s. Fieldwalking has recovered pottery dating from the Roman to the post medieval periods and other finds.

1981 to 1982. Fieldwalking on sticky clay surface where 'faint hollow way and platforms' may be visible.
Roman, medieval and post medieval sherds.
Miscellaneous finds.

Nothing now to be seen.
Completely flat arable field. Farm manager states ploughing has taken place over many years.

(S1) records this as Site 49.
This site is close to the site of a Roman settlement (NHER 18135), but is entirely distinct from it with no sign of early occupation. The medieval settlement had shrunk considerably by the post medieval period.
