Full Description
June 1982. Visit.
Old School House.
House south of church. Clunch, the tops of the walls and gables in flint. In this flintwork in west gable is a stone plaque inscribed 1593 with 'RS' in brickwork each side. 'RS' is said to stand for Robert Smythson. East gable flintwork has diaper brick patterning. On north wall there are blocked upper windows of 'long-low' type in brickwork of around 1600 in the top of the clunch, with smaller square blocked windows in the flintwork above them. Both cut by more recent windows. At ground floor level are various blocked doorways and windows, some of around 1600 and others more recent. Brick quoins to house. The plaque may have been reset when the house was heightenend, but the brick devices also look of the same date. Yet the windows in the clunch do not appear to be earlier. The house may perhaps have been built around 1560 and heightened in 1593. Or it may always have had a flint top to the wall, though this seems less likely. Fair condition.
E. Rose (NAU), 30 June 1982.
