Earthworks of linear banks and ditches are visible on NLA aerial photographs from 1991 (S2) and 1993 (S1) and AAF aerial photographs from 1977 (S3). The site is centred at NGR TF9423 4081 and consists of a linear bank broken in two with a ditch apparent along the northern side. It has previously been interpreted as a causeway, which seems plausible due to the location related to the River Stiffkey. The cut in the feature appears to coincide with the course of the river pre-straightening. This feature runs from NGR TF9428 4083 to TF9418 4084, and is ca. 96m long. The date of these features is unknown.
In addition to this there appears to be further banks curving from NGR TF9430 4076 to TF9422 4082. These appear to coincide with the edge of the former Stiffkey river channel and are presumably related to that, possibly defining its route?
The enclosure previously mentioned on the NHER entry (above) is not automatically apparent. As it is just briefly referred to and no exact location provided, its existence is unclear.
H. Clare (NMP) 11 October 2002.
