Summary

This post medieval house is now used as a hotel. The rear wing was probably built during the 16th or 17th centuries, with the front wing probably added during the 18th century. A three storey block was constructed around 1800 and rear extensions and stables were built during the 19th century. In the backyard is a former railway signal box. It was moved to this location before 1953.

Listing Description:
Public House. C17 rear wing, now altered, early C18 front range, also altered. Colourwashed flint and bricks with pantiled roofs. L plan. 2 storey rear wing of whole flints with extension constructed against north wall. Scattered fenestration. South wall hidden by 3 storey hipped structure (Cliff Top House). Gabled roof. 2 off ridge stacks on opposing slopes. Front range of one storey and dormer attic in 3 bays. Central door flanked by one late C20 tripartite sash left and right below segmental arch. Above openings are 3 through-eaves dormers with C20 sashes under gabled roofs. Dentil eaves cornice. Gabled roof, hipped to south. Northern gable end stack. Interior retains fireplace to this stack and a further fireplace at the south end of the east wall. South half with spine beam, northern half with bridging beams, all chamfered and with run-out stops. Plain joists.

The main building is L-shaped and is used as a hotel. The east to west aligned wing is two storeys and is probably the oldest part of the building, possibly 16th or 17th century. The two storey north to south block aligned was probably added during the 18th century. A three storey block was added around 1800, with rear extensions and stables built during the 19th century.
In the backyard are one or two brick lined wells and a former railway signal box. The signal box was moved to this location before 1953.
