Summary

Systematic fieldwalking identified this as the probable site of an Iron Age settlement, with notable quantities of late prehistoric and Iron Age pottery recovered. Other finds found included Roman, Late Saxon-early medieval, medieval and post-medieval pottery and a medieval roof tile.

70m sq. walked in good conditions, southeast corner of field.
10 undatable pottery sherds (possibly Roman or medieval).
8 late prehistoric flint-gritted pottery sherds.
1 post medieval pottery sherd.

Area of fieldwalking extended over field:

Site BB 35.
Area re-examined. Ploughed, good conditions.
Prehistoric worked flints.
Prehistoric sherds all over area but concentrated in area 30 x 10m:
25 late prehistoric gritty pottery sherds plus scraps.
5 ?Iron Age dark grey sandy pottery sherds.
3 medieval pottery sherds (2 unglazed, 1 glazed Grimston).

Site BB 576 (Context 2).
1 undatable pottery sherd.
1 prehistoric worked flint.
1 ?Late Saxon Thetford ware sherd.
1 ?medieval sherd.
1 medieval sherd (glazed Grimston).
1 medieval peg roof tile.

1 prehistoric worked flint.
2 late prehistoric gritty pottery sherds.
6 Roman pottery sherds.
1 Late Saxon/early medieval Thetford-type ware pottery sherd.
7 medieval pottery sherds including one unglazed "BB 227 type".
1 undatable fired clay lump.
1 undatable copper alloy sheet fragment.

Site BB 578 (Context 4).
2 worked flints. According to (S1) these include a ?Mesolithic serrated blade.
7 undatable pottery sherds.
9 late prehistoric gritty pottery sherds.
1 ?Late Saxon/early medieval Thetford-type ware pottery sherd.
15 medieval pottery sherds.
1 undatable fired chalky clay lump.

Site BB 579 (Context 5).
3 undatable pottery sherds.
26 late prehistoric gritty pottery sherds.
2 ?Iron Age pottery sherds, including 1 dark grey sandy sherd and 1 shelly sherd with impressed ?dot decoration.
1 Late Saxon/early medieval Thetford-type ware pottery sherd.
19 medieval pottery sherds.
1 post-medieval green-glazed pottery sherd.
