NHER 19350 (Building) - Dower House, Norwich Road

June 1981. Listed, Grade II.
Listing Description:
Early 17th century house. Rendered timber-frame. Steep pantile roof with gabled ends. North end brick with corbelled gable parapet with brick chimney stack. Two storeys. Modern casements with glazing bars. One original 5-light hollow-chanfered mullion window on west side. Short gabled wing on south end, rendered timber-frame,
pantile roof.

Seen only from a distance owing to absence of owners. Has north gable of yellowish brick with very odd castellated chimney.
The whole appearing of late date. There are little windows on the upper floor in the side returns of the brickwork. The remainder of the building is timber framed.

One original hollow-chamfered mullioned window of five lights on west side.
Source [1] at the Manor House adjacent states that the name Dower House has no historical connections with the manor; but that a local historian had told her he had seen evidence that this building originally stood on the moated site north of the village (NHER 9941) and was re-erected here, a new brick gable wall being built at that time.

2009. Building survey.
Uniformity of design suggests that the house was built as a single concept, dating from the early 17th century. The house shares similar features such as roof, floors and windows with the Manor House (NHER 13255) located within a hundred yards of the property.
