NHER 19396 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Site of ring ditch and oval enclosure

A possible ring ditch and oval enclosure of probable prehistoric date are visible on aerial photographs (S1). The ring ditch is likely to relate to a Bronze Age round barrow. The open ended oval enclosure to the east may also represent the remains of an oval barrow or possibly a mortuary enclosure associated with the barrow site. Although no definite prehistoric date can be assigned and it is possible that the features are not of great antiquity. The site is centred on TF 8303 4156 and is located at the steep valley side overlooking a tributary of the River Burn. There are several other barrow groups in close vicinity, on either side of the valley slopes, NHER 1020, 12787 to 9, 25950.

The cropmarks reveal slightly a irregular and squat ring ditch, measuring 16m by 12m, located at TF 8301 4156. The actual ditch is also irregular and varies in width from 1 to 3m. To the immediate east of this is a curvilinear enclosure, 26m by 17m, again the ditch varies from 1 to 4m. This enclosure is slightly oval in shape. It is open to the west, with an 11m wide gap/causeway in the ditch. It is possible that this enclosure is in fact D shaped, being closed by a linear running alongside the ring ditch to the west. However, it was thought that this line was more consistent with the geological striping visible surrounding these features.
