Summary

This is the site of a small medieval settlement close to the road leading to Stubbs Green. Fieldwalking has recovered prehistoric flints, fragments of Iron Age, medieval and post medieval pottery and other finds.

23 January 1983. Hales survey site 79.
Small concentration of medieval/Post medieval sherds by house on west side of field. Grass platform (?) between house and Stubbs House (nothing by latter).
General scatter over rest of field.
Clay/loam soil, sticky when wet, quite well weathered though rough ploughed.
4 worked flints - 1 core, 2 flakes, 1 natural (identified by J. Wymer (NAU) January 1985).
1 bowl rim, handmade, very dark grey sandy with large inclusions Early Saxon ? Reidentified as probably Iron Age by A. Gregory (NAU) 1986.
38 medieval unglazed including probable curfew body sherd.
1 probable Stamford ware (Medieval).
10 glazed red earthenware.
2 post medieval black glazed.
1 china.
2 post medieval unglazed.
6 stoneware (one 19th century).
2 18th to 19th century glazed.
1 clay pipe stem with copper alloy mouthpiece.
1 glazed pantile (compare with NHER 19486).
