Summary

Fieldwalking in 1983 and 1989 to 1990 recovered a large concentration of Roman pottery sherds and briquetage, as well as medieval pottery sherds, post medieval metal working debris and briquetage and some undated animal bone. Aerial photography of this area recorded the cropmarks of a possilbe linear feature on this site which may be a continuation of NHER 21730.

18 October 1983. Fenland fieldwalking.
Context 1. Odd sherds Roman pottery scattered over field. TSJ AA.
Context 2 at 5308 1141 small concentration Roman pottery with slight stain on underlying silt. Pottery sparse and only occasional fragments of bone. By side of roddon but not actually on. 26m east to west x 20m north to south. TSJ 5
Context 3 at 5287 1139 as context 2 no obvious briquetage 20m diameter. TSJ 4.
Context 4 at 5282 1137 small concentration Roman pottery, dark stain in silt showing location. Pottery moderately abundant, bone sparse, briquetage in small pieces (also some modern material including baked clay) south side of roddon. 20m northeast to southwest x 21 northwest to southeast. Protected by orchard until recently. TSJ 3.
Context 5 at 5282 1140 concentration of Roman pottery north side of roddon, area showing as slightly darker stain in silt. Small amount animal bone. Pottery moderately abundant, no doubt more would be found if conditions were better.
Also modern baked clay etc. 62m northeast to southwest x 20m northwest to southeast. TSJ 2.
Context 6 at 5275 1137. Small concentration Roman sherds within slightly dark soil on top and down sides of roddon. Sparse animal bone, very little slag (modern?). Rough ploughed surface.

1989-1990. Further fieldwork during Fenland Evaluation Project. Location of existing finds scatter rewalked, and found to constitute one spread. A dossier has been prepared for Historic Buildings and Monuments Comission - copy in file.
