Summary

Earthwork mounds of unknown date, possibly Bronze Age round barrows, were recorded at this location in the late 1940s. Field visits in the 1970s failed to identify the mounds and they may have been quarried away. More recent analysis of visualised lidar data, from a survey flown in 2018, also failed to identify the mounds, but suggests that they could have been of natural origin.

On (S1) 'Earthworks, ?barrows - this area around late 1940s'.

October 1977. visit.
This area is now thickly overgrown with trees and bushes, and though it appears there may be mounds, nothing can be made out.
E. Rose (NAU).

A. Lawson (NAU) believes these mounds may be gravel dumps. He suggests the barrows were quarried away.

October 2025. Northwest Norfolk Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
The undated mounds, possibly Bronze Age round barrows, described above were not identified on the consulted sources. The area is obscured by tree cover on 1940s aerial photographs (such as S2). Visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2018 (S3), shows an area of quarrying here, but also that it forms part of a relatively prominent north-south aligned ridge or scarp, defining the edge of the river valley to its west. This has several prominent ‘lumps’ along its length, which appear to be of natural origin but could conceivably be interpreted as being of archaeological significance, as barrow mounds or similar. No features have been mapped by the project.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 17 October 2025.
