Summary

Fieldwalking and metal detecting in this area during the period 1983-88 recovered various objects. Finds included part of a Roman puddingstone quern, medieval pottery sherds, prehistoric pot boilers and a hone fragment.

October 1983. Found on surface of ploughed field while metal detecting. Scatter of finds quite dense, 20-30m wide, 350m long.
Flint rubble.
Fragment of Roman upper puddingstone quern.
Bricks.
Forty-six medieval sherds from early medieval (Harling-type gritty ware) to late medieval/transitional including Grimston green glazed 13th-15th century sherds.
No metalwork found.

This is the site of earthworks noted by G. Knocker from RAF aerial photographs and suggested as Early Saxon houses; but more likely modern drainage or medieval tofts.
Site since destroyed by ploughing.

The earthworks described above as possible Early Saxon houses, medieval tofts or modern drainage ditches have been mapped as part of the National Mapping Programme and are recorded separately as NHER 57436. They are considered most likely to represent post medieval drainage ditches.
