Summary

A mid-19th-century terrace, with a projecting, pedimented central block. The end houses of the terrace were demolished in the 1980s (Nos 270 and 278).

August 1974. Listed, Grade II.

Early 19th-century terrace with stucco dressings; white brick. Parapet with cornice. Houses separated by pilasters; centre 3 bays project with pediment. Overall 19 bays. Some windows replaced and central bay blocked. Semi-circular doorways; centre door with architrave and pediment on consoles. Slate roofs.
Details from (S1). Important remnant of original Southtown layout with Wyatt's armoury of 1806. Threatened with partial demolition.

Despite objections, the Department of Environment granted permission to demolish houses at each end resulting in present end houses having standard gables instead of hipped roof ends on original layout.

Excerpt of current Listing Description (revised following the demolition of Nos 270 and 278).
"Terrace of nine houses, truncated to seven in late 20th century. 1850s. Gault brick, partly stuccoed and colourwashed. Slate roof. Two storeys; 15-window range in all. Three-bay pedimented centre breaks forward emphasising more prestigious No.274. Remainder of houses of two bays each: a round-arched doorway with a door under a plain fanlight, a window to the side under a gauged skewback arch and two windows to the first floor. Continuous parapet. No.274 of three bays comprising a central door under a pediment flanked by a window right and left and three to the first floor...Gabled roof. One gault-brick ridge stack to each house except No.274 (removed). North and south gables truncated and rebuilt late 20th-century…"
