Full Description
6 February 1984. Large field north of old Hugendon House. Good, well weathered ploughsoil.
Context 1: general scatter medieval sherds with few Roman, medieval not surprisingly more prevalent towards south end field and three Late Saxon. (S1).
Context 2: at 5025 1777 and Context 3: at 5019 1777.
Two small concentrations Roman pottery adjacent to field dyke. Scatters within 30m of each other and likely that both derive from field dyke clearance. Very small amounts brick and fired clay in vicinity but as a fair amount of modern rubbish is spread over field, unlikely to be significant. Some of the material from Context 2 has been reidentified as medieval pottery. (S2), (S3).
Context 2: 28m x 14, Context 3 - 22m x 13m.
For full details of wares, flint types etc see Fenland Folders (S4).
R. Silvester (NAU), 6 February 1984.
