Summary

A prehistoric perforated quartz pebble mace or hammer, found before 1984. Pebble maces of this type are not closely datable, having been found in both Mesolithic and later prehistoric contexts. This large size of this example does however suggest it may be post-Mesolithic.

Found on field of College Farm:
1 prehistoric perforated pebble hammer of fine quartzite with 'hour-glass' perforation. Signs of heavy battering at both ends and some worn facets. Length along major axis 12.7cm. Weight 1250g. See sketch (S1).
Donated to Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1984.202).
Perforated quartzite pebble maces of this kind are not closely datable, having been found in both Mesolithic and later prehistoric contexts. The heavy nature of this example does however make a post-Mesolithic more likely.
