Summary

This is the probable site of a moated medieval manor, known as Foxes Manor. The moat is visible on aerial photographs.

Moated site.
Marked on (S1) and field called Moat Close on (S2).
(S3) shows lane from St James's Green to common passing this moat (had become field boundary by 1839).
Long narrow strip of land from Back Lane to moat still marked on (S4) access from village?
Moat faintly visible on NAU air photographs, also an 18th century field boundary.
Sir Frederick de Cherville held Fox's Manor in temp Henry III 1216 to 1272.
Field 142 on (S2) is Fox's Close, on older maps called Foxes.
Present inhabitants recall a house called Fox's in this area.
Suggest moat is site of Fox's Manor.
In 1822 John Hudson leased land from Cokes here; moat is on his land. His son took over in 1857 about which time New Manor House was built, but John Hudson had lived at Lower House on St James's Green.
