Full Description
9 August 1984. Site visit by E. Rose (NAU).
Follies.
At present northwest end of Belvedere Place, round tower of flint, constructed as 'ruin', with opening having a head on keystone above, and now used as garden shed. Length of 'ruined' flint wall with opening connects to second 'ruined' tower with a spiral staircase inside. Height of towers approximately 2.5m. These features are depicted on the 1926 revised 25in map as in garden of house to south (still shown on 1957 6in map revised 1930-45) on site now occupied by houses of Belvedere Place. At present south end of road where it turns west are two other follies, consisting of a group of arches set each side of the road. These are constructed of 19th century red and white brick (with unusual egg shaped frogs) flint, 19th century terracotta mouldings, and some stone fragments with attached colonnettes, but apparently not ancient. The arches are not shown on 25in map but may have been there as the road at this point coincides with the former drive to the demolished house. Local legend is that the house was used as a school and the follies were built by a teacher (information from member of the public [1]). Arches not really of any value but tower is good example of folly. Owner believed to be residents association.
E. Rose (NAU) 9 August 1984.
Originally recorded in the parish of Eaton, now part of Norwich.
