NHER 21035 (Monument record) - Mesolithic/Early Neolithic worked flints and undated prehistoric worked and burnt flints

Summary

Fieldwalking as part of the Fenland Project identified several concentrations of worked and burnt flints and fragments of animal bone. Although the majority of the worked flints were not closely datable, one small concentration was identified as being probably Mesolithic/Early Neolithic.

20 and 23 December 1984. Fenland Project fieldwalking.
Several discrete concentrations of material identified:

Site FWL 64 (c. 2; TL 6297 8901).
On gently sloping NW face of island. Sparse concentration of flints and 'pot boilers'. Max dimensions 39m NW/SE x 19m NE/SW. Worked flints not closely datable.

Site FWL 65 (c. 3; TL 6298 8904).
On NW side of island. Abundant 'pot boilers' with a few flints, not quite overlapping with FWL 64. Min dimensions 45m NW/SE x 29m NE/SW. Worked flints not closely datable.

Site FWL 66 (c. 4; TL 6302 8906).
On north slope of island and entirely separate from FWL 65. Moderate to abundant spread of 'pot boilers'.

Site FWL 67 (c. 5; TL 6293 8917).
On small island, newly emerged from peat. Adundant spread of 'pot boilers'.

Site FWL 68 (c. 6; TL 6293 8930).
On south edge of island. Small concentration of Mesolithic/Early Neolithic worked flints. Max dimensions 19m NW/SE x 11m NE/SW.
