Full Description
An aircraft crash site previously detailed under this record is now recorded as NHER 45357.
M. Dennis (NLA), 30 June 2006.
18/23 December 1984. Fenland Project fieldwalking.
Several discrete concentrations of material identified:
Site MTW AR (c. 1; TL 7038 9442).
General scatter of worked flints over south-east part of field on flat area of chalk drift. According to the file notes the diagnostic worked flints were of later Neolithic date. This site was not listed in the final publication.
Site MTW AS (c. 2; TL 7033 9454).
On sand also covered by peat. Small scatter of worked flints and one pottery sherd. Max diameter 10m. According to the file notes the sherd was from a Beaker and the worked flints included a knife of similar date. This concentration was not sufficient to be identified as a 'Site' in the final publication.
Site MTW AT (c. 3; TL 7031 9463).
On small ridge projecting into peat. Small number of flints but perhaps because sandhill only just emerging from peat or because soil not ploughed. Max diameter 20m. Worked flints not closely datable. This concentration was not sufficient to be identified as a 'Site' in the final publication.
Site MTW 27 (c. 4; TL 7052 9454).
On side of pronounced ridge above peat-filled hollow. Moderate to abundant spread of 'pot boilers' with very sparse flint and bone. Max dimensions 57m NE/SW x 27m NW/SE. Worked flins not closely datable.
Site MTW 28 (c. 5; TL 7049 9450).
On edge of ridge above peat-filled hollow. Moderate but small spread of 'pot boilers' with a couple of bone fragments. Max dimensions 15m N/S x 24m E/W.
Site MTW 29 (c. 6; TL 7047 9453).
On fairly flat ridge with slope to peat-filled hollow on east. Even but sparse spread of flints, with a few bone and 'pot boiler' fragments. Max dimensions 46m NE/SW x 43m NW/SE. The worked flint assemblage was likely to be predominantly later Neolithic and included a chisel arrowhead and two oblique arrowheads. A small number of pieces were however potentially of an earlier, Mesolithic date, including a single obliquely blunted point (microlith).
Site MTW 30 (c. 7; TL 7032 9444).
Curving around edge of peat-filled hollow. Sparse spread of flints with a few bone fragments and 'pot boilers'. Max dimensions 16m NW/SE x 14m NE/SW. The small worked flints assemblage was tentatively dated as Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age, principally due to the presence of a Levallois core.
Site MTW 31 (c. 8; TL 7029 9440).
Over flat sandhill with gentle slope to south-east. Sparse spread of flints with couple of bone fragments and rare 'pot boilers'. Max dimensions 39m NW/SE x 20m NE/SW. Although the worked flints included two potentially Mesolithic two blade cores, the majority of the pieces were thought to be of a later, Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date (including a fabricator).
Site MTW 32 (c. 9; TL 7037 9451).
On flat sandhill with ridge to west. Sparse to moderate concentration of flints with occasional 'pot boilers' and bone fragments. Max dimensions 39m NE/SW x 36m NW/SE. The majority of the worked flints were not closely datable, although the assemblage appeared to be multi-period, with pieces probable Mesolithic and Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date present.
Site MTW 33 (c. 10; TL 7027 9450).
On ridge surrounded by peat and some disturbance due to infilled dyke. Abundant spread of 'pot boilers' with a few flints, mainly at south end of site. Max dimensions 52m N/S x 21m E/W. Worked flints not closely datable.
For further details see project archive (S1) and final publication (S2). Finds now held by Norwich Castle Museum (NCM).
R.J. Silvester (NAU), 23 December 1984. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 12 September 2013.
4 May 1993. Fieldwalking.
Various finds at TL 7020 9445 (c. 11)
1 human bone fragment (frontal bone of adult female). Probably prehistoric?. Donated to NCM.
1 Early Bronze Age serrated barbed and tanged flint arrowhead. A type classified by Green as a Conygar Hill Type C. A relatively rare 'fancy' type? See file for full description by P. Robins (NCM) and copy of photograph.
2 Roman pottery sherds; both samian (1 rim 1 body).
1 Roman copper alloy vessel attachment or mount. Donated to NCM.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 12 September 2013.
17 October 1994. Metal-detecting.
From area of c. 10:
1 Bronze Age copper alloy blade fragment, possibly a palstave. See illustration (S3). Donated to NCM.
1 Bronze Age jet object. See illustration (S3).
See full list in file.
