Full Description
20 December 1984. Digging foundation trenches. Site east of Bridewell Street, west of Anglican shrine.
Foundation trenches for new disabled pilgrims' hostel dug to depth of 1m concrete laid at base, visible sections to 80cm. No earlier footings or walls exposed, but general spread of made ground of two periods, upper being dark soil with mid to late 19th century material and lower very chalky with brick bats etc. post medieval pantile fragment. Well in one corner. Foreman [1], said base of trenches rested on natural chalk and no masonry encountered.
J. J. Wymer (NAU), 21 December 1984.
This is important in indicating a lack of medieval occupation north of north side of Common Pump Place, as contradicting what has sometimes been suggested as to extent of medieval ?planned town in this area.
E. Rose (NAU), 17 January 1985.
