Summary

Aerial photographs from 1980 record a number of potentially archaeologically-significant 'splodge marks' of oblong/sub-square shape. It was initially suggested that these may indicate the sites of Early Saxon sunken-feature buildings (grubenhauser). However, a subsequent review of the aerial photographs and the results of a geophysical survey undertaken in 2012/2013 suggest that these cropmarks were most likely of geological origin.

Map

9 June 1980.
NAU aerial photography. 100ft (30m) AMSL.
'Splodge marks' of oblong/subsquare shape which may indicate sites of Early Saxon sunken feature buildings or grubenhauser (?).
Compiled by D. Edwards (NAU), 28 1 January 1985. Information from record card (S1).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 2 May 2023.

April 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Positive cropmarks are visible on aerial photographs (S2) and (S3) centred on TG 2426 1326, however it seems more likely that they relate to geological marks or quarrying activity and have therefore not been mapped.
E. Bales (NMP), April 2010.

September 2012-March 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area.
These cropmarks were shown to coincide with a dense cluster of discrete anomalies, although these were all deemed to be of probable geological origin (these responses coinciding with a band of Lowestoft Till mapped at this location).
See report (S4) and NHER 66878 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 1 May 2023.
