Full Description
Pill box. Site of? Records by pill box survey of 'opposite Briggate Mill near Bridge'. No trace found, but corner of bridge has been recently rebuilt; possibly demolished.
E. Rose (NAU), 19 July 1985.
See record form in file by source [1], who adds:
Common 1940 type 22 pillbox, completely overgrown. Opposite ruins of mill.
Survey No. H2-7 (S1).
D.Walker (NLA) July 1996.
November 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The World War Two Type 22 pillbox described above is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs (S2)-(S3). It would have formed part of the line of defences that was erected along the River Ant stop line. It is one of a number of such structures at Briggate, clustered around the road and rail crossings over the Ant; for example, further pillboxes were located 285m to the northwest (NHER 17019) and 180m to the south (NHER 32561).
NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TG 3159 2743 to TG 3151 2742. This discrepancy in the locational data probably accounts for no trace of the structure being found in 1985 (see above).
S. Tremlett (NMP), 23 November 2006.
