Summary

Fenland fieldwalking here in 1985 recovered sherds of Late Saxon and medieval pottery close to a possible medieval trackway. Pieces of post medieval or modern building rubble were also noted during this work. Metal-detecting in 2024 recovered Middle Saxon and medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval jettons and a range of other metal objects, including a Roman to medieval unidentified copper alloy hooked object; Late Saxon/medieval lead spindle whorls; a medieval buckle, strap end, silver brooch, lead seal matrices and lead papal bulla (Honorius III); a medieval/post-medieval strap fitting and thimble and a post-medieval lead spindle whorl.

24 September 1985. Fieldwalking, poor conditions, ploughed and harrowed but too dry.
Context 1: general scatter of medieval sherds, quite a few in view of conditions. Site TYS AQ. Plus three Late Saxon sherds.
Context 2: at [1]. Small concentration medieval sherds in field adjacent to potato patch. Also some modern material presumably from demolished buildings. Approximately 30 x 20m. Site TYS AM.
Context 3: at [2]. Odd sherds medieval pottery on edge of drove. Approximately 10m diameter. Site TYS AN.
Context 4: at [3]. On edge of drove?, concentration sparse medieval pot, plus few bits bone, some brick fragments. Some grey staining of soil. Few post medieval sherds. Site TYS 10.

Roman to medieval unidentified copper alloy hooked object.
1 Middle Saxon coin.
2 Late Saxon/medieval lead spindle whorls.
14 medieval coins, 1 jetton, a buckle, strap end, 2 lead seal matrices, lead papal bulla of Honorius III (1216-1227) and silver annular brooch.
Medieval/post-medieval strap fitting and thimble.
1 post-medieval jetton and a lead spindle whorl.
Information from PAS import.
The medieval silver annular brooch was disclaimed as Treasure (Ref: 2024 T141) and returned to the finder.
