Summary

The construction history of this post medieval house is not clear and a number of interpretations have been suggested. The earliest surviving section is late medieval to 17th century in date. Extensive rebuilding took place in the 17th or 18th century, with further rebuilding and enlargement during the 19th (and possibly early 20th) century.

Map

November 1985. Stower Grange Hotel, Old Rectory. Visit (exterior only seen).
Basically 17th century.
Overall building of eleven bays but several builds. Now in three sections delineated by roof lines, central section of five bays and western two bays of eastern section are original house, shown by flint plinth, projecting return of flint edged in brick on line of original east gable, and older brickwork. Main south façade hidden by creeper but at rear (north) it can clearly be seen that this original building was single storeyed; projecting springer of original gable in centre of north wall of east part; stack on line of this gable. Plan of house still retains original end stack plan. Marks on north wall suggest attic storey windows at top of original walling. Building heightened in 18th century? brick and extended one bay east in 18th or 19th century; roof of east section (three bays) including part original block later lowered again. West section added in gault brick later 19th century, three bays two storeys with hipped roof and doorway; 19th century doorway also to east section. At rear (north) double gabled two storey projection in purple brick must post date heightening of original building - perhaps early 18th century. Also a large whitewashed rear extension to central and west section, with projecting bay - 19th century.
(S1) says interior has only late work visible including 19th century staircase, and cellar (undated).
