Summary

Fieldwalking in 1985 for the Fenland Survey recovered a number of Late Saxon, Late Saxon to early medieval, and medieval pottery sherds. A number of concentrations of medieval pottery sherds, combined with bone, shell, building rubble and rubbish, were also noted, as well as the remains of a possible medieval drove.

4 December 1985. Fenland fieldwalking, weathered ploughsoil (S1).
Context 1: general scatter medieval sherds, with two small groups. Also includes Thetford ware (Late Saxon) and Stamford (Late Saxon to early medieval). TSC AT.
Context 2 at 5404 1819. On edge of drove.
Concentration medieval pottery sparse to moderate, moderate shell, very sparse bone, post medieval rubbish (moderate to abundant). Area of 28m north to south minimum x 36m east to west. TSC 7 at 2.7m OD.
Context 3 at 5394 1828. On edge Elvers Lane which may have been a drove or 'green' edge.
Note that ditch at edge now filled in and material perhaps ploughed across it. Concentration moderate medieval pot, moderate to abundant shell, sparse to moderate bone. Post medieval material sparse. 2.7m OD. TSC 8.
Context 4 at 5403 1828. On edge medieval drove.
Concentration of medieval to early post medieval pottery moderate, moderate shell, sparse bone. Abundant post medieval rubble. 2.7m OD. TSC 9.
