Summary

This rare and unusual example of a brick and slate gunpowder store with a stepped gable and inner and outer airtight Welsh slate doors was built around 1860. It was used as an explosives store for a local militia who paraded on what is now the Cherry Tree car park.

Tudor Cottage. In garden, but formerly in garden of houses in Quebec Road. Note location on map may not be exact, owing to changes.
Gunpowder store. Rare and unusual example of brick magazine with airtight doors. Bears a date in 19th century. More details awaited but if as suggested it dates after the American War and before the 1850s it is remarkably unusual in a place such as Dereham. Listing applied for in 1986.

Corrected information from report to Breckland District Council, November 1987 states that the building dates to about 1860, as explosives store for local militia who paraded on what is now the Cherry Tree car park. Brick and slate with stepped gable, 'originally' had inner and outer doors each a single slab of Welsh slate. Has enamel plaque quoting explosives act of 1875. Presented to Breckland District Council for preservation by [1].
