Summary

Fieldwalking and metal detecting in this area between 1986 and 2021 recovered a potentially Neolithic flint scraper; Iron Age, Iron Age or Early Saxon, Roman, Early/Middle Saxon, Middle Saxon, potentially Late Saxon, medieval, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; a prehistoric saddle quern; a Roman jet bead; Roman and medieval coins and a number of other, Roman to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include a Roman brooch; Early Saxon brooch fragments; a Late Saxon strap end; a Late Saxon to post-medieval lead spindle whorl; medieval and post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval harness pendant and lead spindle whorl; a medieval/post-medieval purse frame fragment and copper alloy vessel fragment and a post-medieval coin weight, spur side fragment and crotal bell.

Pottery: nine Roman sherds. Ten medieval unglazed. Five Glazed Grimston. One Late medieval transitional. Three post medieval stoneware. Three Iron Age/?Early Saxon (two coarse sandy, one gritty).

First half 1999. Metal detecting. [3].
Part of Late Saxon cast copper alloy strap end. Stylised animal head terminal with moulded brow ridge faceted ears on the end of a flaring flat, rectangular section plate which is broken 16.5mm from the terminal. The style is typically Late Saxon, with parallels at Whitby and York. 10th to 11th century.

October 2000. Sheds stand in the field. In area walked in grid, near thorn hedge just behind sheds.
Prehistoric/?Neolithic flint scraper. Rounded left side and part of distal edge on thin flake of translucent grey brown flint. Glossy and unpatinated.

Medieval/post-medieval purse frame fragment.
Post-medieval buckle, button, spur side fragment, coin weight and crotal bell.
