Full Description
26 April 1986.
Visit to Atlas Aggregates pit on east side of A10 by Quaternary Research Association. Gravel dug to a depth of around 7m from surface to top of Nar Valley marine beds of Hoxnian Interglacial Age. Finds found in scree of pit by Dr P. Boylan and J.J. Wymer (NAU):
1 Palaeolithic rolled flint flake with ancient edge damage. Patinated grey-white. Butt is faceted. (P. Boylan).
1 Palaeolithic fragmentary flint handaxe. Very rolled, almost unrecognisable butt of a pointed handaxe. Stained and covered with incipient cones of percussion and battering (J. J. Wymer).
Both objects are now held by the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1986.232).
Compiled by J. J. Wymer (NAU), 19 June 1986. Information from (S1).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 26 November 2013.
Before 1992. Stray Find.
Found by workman at unknown location within quarry and reported by [1]:
1 Lower Palaeolithic flint handaxe. Sub-cordate form (Wymer Type GK), similar to those that were recovered in the late 19th century in a pit a little way to the south (NHER 2266). See drawing (S2).
This handaxe is also described and sketched on (S3).
W. Milligan (NCM) 29 October 1992. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 26 November 2013.
The finds from this pit are also noted in (S4) and (S5), although the entries conflate these discoveries with those from the pits to the south (NHER 2266 and NHER 2268).
P. Watkins (HES), 26 November 2013.
