Summary

In 1954 the foundations of 17th century houses and a 12th century cooking pot and hearth were found during the digging of a sewer trench along Row 113.

Row 113 (now partly Townshend Close) between King Street and Middlegate Street (now Tolhouse Street).

1954. Sewer trench cut along Row after clearance of bomb damage.
Foundations of 17th century houses, standing over layers of silt and sand and shingle, sloping towards river, to depth of 3m. Large cooking pot with base at 183.m OD found resting in wood ash in pebble built fireplace cut down from earlier ground surface; but due to cutting of sewer, date of latter could not be ascertained. Pot is of well known 12th century type and dates fireplace to second half of that century. Pot in Old Merchants House in 1960.
