Summary

Linear ditches most likely relating to multi-phase boundaries, field boundaries, trackways and enclosures are seen as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Some of the linear ditch features most likely relate to levelled post medieval field boundaries visable as earthworks on the 1940s aerial photographs.

Map

30 June 1980. Aerial photography. Crop marks.
Irregular field boundary shown on 1957 6" OS, now removed, shown by aerial photographs to represent one half of a rectangular feature, and trackway on its south side. Other linear marks to north.
A. Gregory (NCM) 1986.

16 July 1986. Further NAU air photography.
Cropmarks of two smaller rectangular enclosures visible to south of earlier features.
D. Edwards (NAU).

June 2017. Aerial Imagery Interpretation.
Assessment of aerial imagery along proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms.
Cropmarks of enclosure and other potentially related linear anomalies identified in eastern part of site (Site 30).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 30 September 2024.

October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms.
This survey identified evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a number of the cropmarks in this group, including a small enclosure at TG 1444 2542, a probable trackway running between TG 1422 2542 and TG 1445 2544 and a north-to-south aligned boundary at TG 1429 2546 (shown to probably be the eastern side of another rectilinear enclosure associated with the trackway).
Information from draft report. See NHERs 65923 and 65924 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 30 September 2024.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms.
This work saw the excavation of several trenches that coincided with cropmark visible in the vicinity of TG 1426 2545. Although a number of associated ditches were recorded little dating evidence was recovered - finds being largely limited to two small prehistoric pottery sherds found in one of the ditches associated with the probable trackway.
Information from draft report. See NHER 65924 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 30 September 2024.

October 2021. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Linear ditches most likely relating to multi-phase boundaries, field boundaries, trackways and enclosures are seen as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S2-S6). The majority of the boundaries and the trackway are most likely medieval to post medieval in date. It is also possible that some of the linear ditch features and the enclosure centred at TG 1444 2541 may be Iron Age to Roman in date. Some of the linear ditch features, visible as cropmarks on S2-S4, most likely relate to levelled post medieval field boundaries visible as earthworks on the 1940s aerial photographs (S1). As these features are mapped in good detail on the historic maps (for example S7), these features have not been mapped as part of this project. The monument polygon has been amended to the extent of the features as seen on S2-S4.
J. Powell (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 28 October 2021.
